I don’t usually read short story collections in one sitting, preferring instead to read one or two at a time in between my current novel. Indeed, that’s how I’d planned to read Things We Say In the Dark. But I hadn’t planned for how captivating the entire collection would be, and ended up devouring two thirds of it over the course of several hours, only stopping because I needed that inconvenient thing called sleep before that inconvenient thing called work the next day. As soon as I could, I read the remaining third, my novel pushed to one side to make room for these delightfully atmospheric stories.

I’ve struggled with short story collections in the past, finding that even if I love some stories, I don’t like others, and so overall I’ve tended to find them a bit average. Not so with Things We Say in the Dark. Sure, there were a few I loved more than others, but I liked every single one (even the few I’m not sure I completely *got*). Uniquely, there is a narrator threaded throughout the collections, disguised as the author, who narrates a paragraph or two before most stories. Queer, dark and captivating, I would recommend this collection to anyone who likes a bit of the macabre.
