Caleb's Crossing
by Geraldine Brooks
I find Geraldine Brooks’ work to be such a paradox of depths and shallows. This is the 3rd novel I’ve read by her and like the previous works this started by drawing me in to a richly developed historical world. In this case Brooks transports the reader to 1600s New England. Bethia, the narrator, is a fascinating woman. However, the male characters, including Caleb, are not well developed. The plot starts strong but I am honestly thinking that Brooks has some sort of block on finishing strong. Just like with the ending Year of Wonder I was left feeling like a different author stepped in.
