Long Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela
by Nelson Mandela
I agree with Richard Stengel (collaborator with Nelson Mandela when putting this book together) - As he said in an interview, this book is not only an autobiography of Nelson Mandela, it is a biography of South Africa.
The book is long and very detailed in the people, processes, and struggles that were involved in the restructuring of South Africa’s government over decades. ...but yet, it very rarely, if ever, came across as dry to me. And to have such a long walk (pardon the blatant reference) be summarized into a pamphlet would cheapen the effort and time it took; the length and detail is necessary.
“I have walked that long road to freedom. I have tried not to falter; I have made missteps along the way. But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can only rest for a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not ended.” - Nelson Mandela
