Emperor of Thorns by Mark Lawrence
5.0

The last installment of the Broken Empire continues Lawrence's earlier streak of excellence.

Jorg's evolution continues, as does our understanding of the world left after the fall of the Builders.

Lawrence continues his framework of two stories, this time separated by five years. The early story takes over where the earlier story left off in [b:Prince of Thorns|9579634|Prince of Thorns (The Broken Empire, #1)|Mark Lawrence|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327917754s/9579634.jpg|14466531] - with Jorg in his grandfather's court on the Horse Coast. It answers questions that we were left with after the second book: What happened with Ibn Faed? Where did Jorg get the gun? What did Fexler want?

In the "now" storyline, we follow Jorg to congression. Miana, now 15 and pregnant, is a meaningful voice again in this story, though like the last she does very little. I really liked the queen - she was a good match for Jorg in both intellect and cunning, though like most she falls short of him in ruthlessness. Jorg's struggle to deal with his position - which he hadn't really accepted in the second book - and impending fatherhood is interesting and gives us a lot of insight.

The Dead King marches over Empire. His goals, identity and weaknesses remain unknown. The story spends more time from the point of view of other characters than it did in the previous two books. I think it is a good development, and allows the reader to have a much fuller understanding of what's happening without giving the game away.

The way these three storylines come together and resolve is unexpected, but at the same time has been prepared and foreshadowed for the last two books.

An excellent close to an excellent trilogy.
