All's Well: A Novel by Mona Awad

3.0

When rising actress Miranda Fitch suffers from a debilitating fall off stage, she starts losing all sense of herself in a fog of opioids and pain. Specialist after specialists insist the pain is in her head, her marriage is falling apart and she takes on a role as the theater director at a local community college in an attempt to save her marriage and herself. The position leaves her feeling more hollow than before and her divorce catapults her into a never ending nightmare of a reality alone. On a night when it seems all hope is lost, Fitch meets 3 men in her local bar who seem to have the remedy for all of her woes and unbeknownst to her she makes a deal she can’t get out of.

All’s Well was a very very slow read for me and honestly it almost ended up my first DNF of the year! I really chalk it up to the writing style - the stream of consciousness from Miranda felt like it got in the way of moving the story along so often. I found myself skipping over some paragraphs to get myself moving along. The story itself and some of the characters felt absolutely brilliant and it was so heartbreaking to experience Miranda’s lack of respect from her medical providers. Those aspects were what motivated me to push through to the end.
