If you want to be snowbound in a country house at Christmas with the obligatory cast of assorted oddballs while imagining that it could have been a Fritz Lang film with Ray Milland as David then this is the book for you. The plot is of the slightest but murder, bad weather, a strong sense of chiaroscuro, and a whiff of the supernatural render plot quite beside the point. Besides, Ray Milland. Works for me every time.
