Farewell, Ghosts by Nadia Terranova

4.0

Italian novels are quickly becoming my favorite. This one is beautifully written (and translated). It tells of Ida's reckoning (as an adult) with her father's disappearance 23 years previously and her relationship with her mother. Ida and her mother suffered this great loss at the same time, but didn't seem to share the experience. It is during a visit to her childhood home to help her mother sort through possessions that Ida looks back at the loss, her relationship with her mother, and also reflects on a childhood friendship, losing her virginity, and her marriage. Wonderful.
