The Herbwitch's Apprentice by Ireen Chau

4.0

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars

This was such a cute and fun story! It surprised me in a good way!

When I first picked up this book, I was little hesitant about it. As a Christian, I'm very wary towards books with witches, werewolves, etc... because of the occult undertones they often have in them. I was worried that this book, which is about witches, would have a dark, occult themes in it. I'm so glad to say it doesn't!
The magic in this book is very tame. The magic, in some ways, feels more scientific than it does supernatural. If you are okay with how magic is presented in series like "The Chronicles of Narnia" and "Lord of the Rings," I think you will be okay with the magic in "The Herbwitch's Apprentice".

As for the actual story itself, I really liked it. The cast of characters are fun, the romance is sweet and innocent, and there are enough twists to keep things interesting.

My favorite character in this series has to be Ash. It's nice to see such a male lead who isn't toxic towards the main character at any point. I liked that he and Amarante have a solid friendship that turns into something more. As for Amarante, at first I didn't like her. She seemed like that stereotypical "I'm not like other girls," type of character. She really grew on me by the end, though!
I also liked the side characters. I hope we get to see more Amarante's friends in the next book!

I only have two small issues with this book. One is that there are too many characters. We are introduced to many characters in the first half of the book and it was hard to keep some of them straight sometimes.
The other issue I had was that I think there was one too many side plots [SPOILER]. I think we could have done without the side plot of Amarante being forced to be Narcissa's servant. I honestly don't think it was necessary to plot and I found those scenes to be annoying, honestly [END OF SPOILER].

This book is the for the most part such a sweet and light read. I'm so glad I gave this book a chance. I will definitely be picking up the next book in the series when it's released!
