Red Rising by Pierce Brown

4.5 stars. Just fantastic. Eager to read the next installment. It's like The Hunger Games, but minus the naivety and fumbling plot, although I hate to draw a comparison between the two. This novel, the universe, its characters and expertly delivered plot, strategies and battles are in a league of their own.

My only complaint would be the hamfisted twist at the end, which was infuriatingly apparent very early in the novel from the very first neon lit 'clue'. How Darrow missed it, I don't know. Maybe the author was trying to speak to Darrow's character. The resolution of the twist was underwhelming, a little formulaic, but understandable as it is clearly setting up for the next instalment.
