The Genesis of Misery by Neon Yang
3.0

This book is great if you over look it's major flaw.

Pacing. It's not slow by any means but moves too fast for you to feel any attachment to the characters other than the main character. In one chapter, a character despises someone only to be head over heels in love the next. Interesting subjects are brought up but dropped in order to get to the next plot point. Interludes that skip over parts that could be interesting in order to get it over quicker. It makes you wonder if the author had been forced to be under a certain number of pages and couldn't tell the whole story.
The pacing also leads to the lackluster ending. You can tell this book is meant to be the first in a series, but a sequel has not come out at the time of this review. Read alone, the ending is a miserable outcome for the few characters that are prominent throughout. If you are interested, wait until a sequel is published.
