Augmented by M.J. Douglas, M.J. Douglas

4.0

”Augmented” is M.J. Douglas’ debut novel. Having read and enjoyed their second book, “Echo”, I was curious enough to seek it out and, fortunately, wasn’t disappointed. “Augmented” is perhaps not as polished at “Echo” (for instance, there is as a minor plot hole to do with contacts/glasses) but is nevertheless an interesting and intelligent read. I personally enjoyed it quite a bit and almost as much as “Echo”.

You don’t have to be technologically advanced to follow the story despite it being quite heavy on technology. “Augmented” is a dystopian science fiction novel set sometime in the future in the American Midwest. Augmentation (not quite virtual reality but often rather close) is widespread, almost universal, and used to hide the world as it really is and keep the population docile. We follow Chris, a reclusive semi-technophobe, who for various reasons becomes tasked with having to find a way to end augmentation and thus the hold a less than benevolent government has over the general population.

Twists and turns abound in this well-crafted novel, and there is a natural progression from “Augmented“ to “Echo” – perhaps even an instance where I sensed the idea for “Echo” germinating. M.J. Douglas is gifted writer whose works I look forward to following in the future.
