End of Watch
by Stephen King
A slightly disappointing finale to the series. I appreciate the way that King has tried his hand at a more standard police mystery with this trilogy and for the most part thoroughly enjoyed the first two installments. Hodges is a solid central individual surrounded by an engaging group of secondary characters, and his cases involving Hartsfield and Bellamy are both quite intriguing and interesting to follow. However, the plot of this one goes a little off the rails as King pays off the paranormal tease he doled out in Finders Keepers, with everything becoming rather convoluted and requiring far too much suspension of disbelief. I would have been fine with Brady only being featured in the first book with this story centered around a new villain; the second book of the trilogy is my favorite since it features such excellent, satisfying story construction and with a few minor edits it could easily stand alone. Enjoyable, but a bit of a letdown, although I really grew to love Holly.
