Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah

4.5

Imagine a dystopian America where prisoners have to star in a reality show in which they fight for years to earn their freedom and that is only if they survive the gladiator-type fights. This is the reality of the characters in Chain Gang All-Stars. If you’re not already, this book makes you question our justice system, mass incarceration, American capitalism, institutional racism & America’s insatiable thirst for violence. I devoured this book and my heart hurt the entire time, thinking of all the ways the American criminal justice system is failing our country. Where a black or brown person gets life in prison for possession but a r*p!st basically gets a slap on the wrist.

If you can read this book & still think that reading isn’t political, you’re not thinking critically when you read a book like this.
