“Sometimes I feel like I’ve been building you a House out of my own bones. And still, you look at me with so much contempt and mistrust. You complain because there are gaps in the roof of my ribs, and you ask me to give more of myself to fill them.”
i’m in awe of alexis henderson’s gift for setting and atmosphere. reading this has the same vibe as exploring a once-lavish abandoned manor. i never get tired of the “girl drawn into luxurious world only to discover dark secrets” microtrope.
this is not technically a vampire book, though it does revolve around nobles who consume blood for sustenance and “medical” purposes. we follow marion shaw as she accepts a position as a bloodmaid at a prestigious house and becomes entangled with the mysterious countess who she serves.
if you’d asked me before i started this, i would not have said that needles bother me. however, there were several scenes here that made my skin crawl! this is slow, dread building horror at its finest. my only complaints are these: it could’ve been hornier, and the third act felt a little rushed. still another excellent work from henderson.
