Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney

5.0

I became a fan of Alice Feeney's during the pandemic... I love thrillers and female writers who exist in this genre in particular. I love Ms. Feeney's plots and characters, her books have a powerful edginess, well done twists and turns, and strong, consistent tension and uncertainty that underlies her narratives.
As a fan of this author and of thrillers I can say that Daisy Darker is my favorite so far. I am so grateful to Flatiron for a very generous early copy (won via Instagram for @meghan_readsbooks) and for their generosity to reviewers like me. Thank you thank you!

What works in this book is what has worked for me in Rock Paper Scissors, Sometimes I Lie, and His & Hers: twists and turns, narratives that capture and sustain tension, and vibrant characters and story. Solid storytelling that is plot driven but also filled with well developed characters. The chilling poem about family members, the superficial/faux happiness that is covering long simmering tensions, the blending of secrets with murder and the perfect isolated island setting.

What is new for me with this book is the broader set of characters, the focus on families (past books to me have been more about individuals and their past or couples and their relationships) and intergenerational relationships. I love family dramas and family and drama are what this book is all about... who is killing the Darkers one by one on this small secret filled island setting?

Go buy it, preorder it, and just set aside a day, maybe two, to enjoy this book. If you are new to Feeney's work... this is a great place to start and if you are a fan already... I know you will love it. This book is next level in Ms. Feeney's writing career and establishes her as a top thriller writer.
