Pet by Akwaeke Emezi

5.0

"Pet" by Akwaeke Emezi proved to be an astonishing and unexpected gem. Going into it with just the knowledge of its fantasy genre, I was taken on a journey far beyond my expectations. The narrative unfolds in a world where gender conformity doesn't exist, striving for equality and progress while grappling with its own oversights.

What struck me profoundly was its  depth. Emezi skillfully challenges established beliefs, inviting readers to question their perceptions of good and bad, right and wrong, revealing that appearances often deceive. The central inquiry—what defines a monster and its appearance—resonates far beyond the book, encouraging reflection on various facets of life.

This novel delves into weighty themes in an accessible manner, making it impactful and thought-provoking. I particularly recommend the audiobook; it beautifully amplifies the narrative with cultural nuances that might otherwise be overlooked, enriching the overall experience.
