Central Park
by Guillaume Musso
3.5 stars
I was quite surprised by this book. I thought it would be a standard thriller, but then there were so many plot twists and revelations that were so shocking that I questioned my comprehension abilities on the French language.
The reason why this book earned 3.5 stars is because of the pacing. It starts off strong: two strangers, Alice and Gabriel, are handcuffed together in Central Park. Alice has no memory of how she got there, and she finds her clothes stained with blood with an unregistered gun in her handbag. My heart was racing. This is such an exciting start! But then the plot slowed considerably, interjected with flashbacks to Alice’s past. The plot does begin to pick up towards the end, but it was way too far into the book. I did consider dnf-ing this book at some stages.
I liked the dynamics between Gabriel and Alice. They obviously hate and distrust each other, which makes their jabs so much funnier. Until the final reveal about Gabriel. And then I became a bit concerned on how ethical his actions are...
Central Park is an interesting read, very different from your standard mystery-thriller. I liked the plot twists (there are many, so do try to keep up) because it left me reeling. The middle of the book does drag on considerably though. Overall, not a bad read!
