The Veiled Kingdom by Holly Renee

3.5

This story follows a girl on the run from her father but to is caught by rebels with Dacre, the son of a rebellion commander. I haven’t read Renee’s previous books but I have to say that their writing is amazing. I do have to say that it did take me a bit to get into the story but once Nyra gets to the rebels place, that’s when the story begins. I really enjoyed the world that Renee created. It’s very fascinating but there is more to the story that we don’t know. I hope the author digs deeper in the next book. The pacing was great. There weren’t many conflicts in the book and sometimes the story did feel empty as it was just practicing how to fight and Dacre groveling.  I do have to say that the plot twists weren’t really a plot twist as everything was expected. This story is told from dual povs of both Nyra and Dacre.

Nyra ran away from home and is captured by the rebels. I enjoyed her story and seeing her develop. There’s more development for her to come as so far it just showed her romance, her fighting, and why she ran away. Dacre is the MMC and he was great too. He was an alphahole most of the book but he wasn’t sure if he could trust Nyra. There were many side characters in the book. I liked Darcre’s sister and I hope we get more of her in the next book. The romance is very slow burn with a lot of angst. The tropes are enemies to lovers and forbidden love.

The ending is a minor cliffhanger which was expected for a fantasy series. Overall this book wasn’t bad but it wasn’t fully amazing. It was lacking in the worldbuilding department a lot which you can tell would be amazing if readers got information on it. There is so much potential in the fantasy aspect of the series which I hope to see more of in the next book.
