It's like if the matrix and the handmaids tail were one book. I think it would be a 4 stars on its own but when you compare it to the handmaid's tale it can't even compare. I enjoyed it though, it didn't feel like it was necessarily trying to be a great work of literary fiction, it was just for fans of the first book to get more perspective and information about this universe Atwood masterfully created in the first book. It's a nice book for fans but nowhere close to depth of meaning in the handmaid's tale and those that don't care too much about the characters and setting of the first novel could skip this one without missing anything.
