katiejane 's review for:
Prima Facie
by Suzie Miller
Listened to the audiobook excellently narrated by Geraldine Hakewill.
A hard hitting novel based on the 2019 one woman play of the same name. This compelling novel really got under my skin in the same way the me too movement did. The focus here is not just on sexual assault, but on how the justice system is not fit for purpose and lets down survivors again and again. It made me reflect a lot on my own experiences and those of people I love, and on the social and structural mechanism that allow perpetrators to repeatedly commit crimes and take up such powerful positions. On a side note, It will be interesting to see if the new 2021 affirmative consent laws where I live here in NSW Australia help more survivors find justice.
