If I Have To Be Haunted by Miranda Sun

4.0

☆ rounded up from 3.5/3.75!

honestly, for the first bit of this book, i was expecting to give it a 3☆ rating: it felt a bit convoluted, and although the world was interesting, i didn’t find myself taking an interest in the characters.

however, that changed pretty quickly— cara and zach embarked on a quest reminiscent of the fantasy stories i read back when i was just starting to pick up chapter books. it was so nostalgic: the classic concept of a fantastical quest with trials, but slightly different from the books of my childhood. even though there weren’t any extreme stand out moments for me, it was enjoyable to read, and paced well (to the point where i was flying through the book).

cara and zach are definitely my favorite parts of the book, just because their banter was fun to read, and it seemed generally believable. i wish more of cara’s culture and heritage was discussed or touched upon, just because her familial relationships were set up to be a major aspect of the story, but then fell flat (for me) in terms of showing their actual importance for the story.

otherwise, i’d recommend if i have to be haunted to those looking for a quest book that feels somewhat nostalgic (but also generally fast-paced and high-stakes), with fun banter and ghost-y vibes!
