Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy

challenging emotional relaxing slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Complicated

I'm not going to lie, I started this book because I thought the movie trailer looked cool. This book is better than I thought it would be. It takes a long time to get fully into due to the Victorian language and slow pacing. The writing style is long-winded and flowery, but it it helps you envision the setting. I felt like I was in the English countryside as I was reading the vivid descriptions. The beginning feels cozy and relaxing. As you approach the end, you'll be at the edge of your seat.

My only complaint is that Bathsheba's character feels so limited. I wanted to get more of her internal monologue.  She's is the classic "woman written by a man" trope. It felt like the author was infantilising her and making get flighty to a point where it became ridiculous. This book also features a lot of misogynistic views that reflect the time period it was written in. At times, it can be off-putting.
