Lights Out by Navessa Allen

dark slow-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? No
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

Damn…. Unfortunately I was kind of excited for this? Once I realised that it was a serial killer son and nurse, I was so excited. So disappointed with the execution :(

The dialogue was so unnatural and stinted. The plot (??) was basically nonexistent. The smut got so boring after a while, and any cringe innuendo had me physically recoiling. The writing was… meh? (Every “Fred” interaction had me groaning and rolling my eyes).

I think it should have just leaned into the “dark” aspect fully instead of forcing the audience to know “this is bad!! Josh knows it’s bad, Ally knows it’s bad!!” …I know, that’s why I’m reading it. And the obvious “I’m sorry women :(“ theme was way too on the nose, which made it annoying as hell. I think Allen has potential, you just have to go all in! Readers are not stupid, we can handle some dark themes without being smacked in the face every sentence, being told “It’s wrong!”
