Duma Key by Stephen King

4.0

When I read, I read the books at face value and don’t tend to get too hung up on trying to distinguish it as anything other than a story that the author has generously decided to share with the world. Then I try to rate it based on how well it entertained me, not as a literary critic. I see a lot of people talk about Stephen King’s books and I think they often miss that he likely writes for himself foremost and if folks like it good, and if not, well okay. I obviously can’t speak for him but I don’t think when he sets out to write a novel that he’s always trying to create the next literary masterpiece. His writing seems like he’s just trying to have fun with the characters and the worlds he creates.

That being said, I loved Duma Key. The characters, the setting, the plot…all of it was really enjoyable and genuinely creepy at times. Like most other King books it was unwise for me to become attached to any of these characters because he’ll ultimately break your heart their untimely death. Was it a literary masterpiece? No. Was it a really good read that allowed me to escape and immerse myself in the lives of interesting characters? Yes. And that’s what I look for in most books, so this one was a win for me.
