Unfu*k Yourself: Get Out of Your Head and Into Your Life by Gary John Bishop

5.0

Very short book to the point. Cheesy title, sure but everyone at some point of their life need a little kick to get moving. I listened to this book early in January because I’ve noticed that I was slacking in general. There was even a job I was interested in applying to but never did the work for prepare for the interview. I was slacking and I knew it. I knew I needed a little kick. So I started listeninng to this to remind myself that I’m blocking myself from moving on. I just needed to work a little harder.

Some notes:

Chapter 2: I’m willing
No buts, if you try to defend where you’re are right now, then you’ve chosen it. Stop blaming yourself or anywhere. Stop the blame game and start something. No one can make you be willing, you need to do it. Everytime you say “I’m willing but” you need to stop. The “but” is a huge issue. Recognize and catch yourself everytime you say “I want to do this but”. Willingness doesn’t come with buts.

Chapter 3: I’m wired to win
Every when you’re losing, you’re winning how? Suppose you’re stuck in failed relationships one after the other, maybe you’re just winning at losing. Maybe, you’re stuck in a cycle. You are hard wired to win. Maybe the issue is in choosing what you’re winning at? right??? Maybe you’re choosing wrong. Maybe you’re winning at being lazy, maybe you’re trying to prove that you’re lazy, right?

Chapter 4: I got this
Negative experiences spread quickly. One negative aspect can ruin many aspects of your life at once. Take a minute to remember what’ve you’ve overcome so far in yourself. Put things in perspective. Think of all the problems you’ve faced before and how you overcome them.

Chapter 5: I embrace the uncertainty
We crave stability. We crave certainty. Uncertainty is hard but the catch is is … opportunities come with uncertainty. If you want to change things, it will involve risking something, it will involve uncertainty. It’s a hard thing on our brain but it is the only way to get out of things.

Chapter 6: I’m not my thoughts: I’m what I do.
Distracted at work. Wasting time. Looking at notifications one after the other. Todo list becomes a not todo list. So distracted. Plus the thoughts of not being worthy of anything and thoughts of being a loser etc.

You can’t wait for the right mood to come. You need to ACT ANYWAY. Recognize the pattern. “You change your life by doing not by thinking of doing”. These thoughts of unworthiness don’t affect your reality. Your reality is defined by your actions. Thoughts like doubt, fear etc will be there.
You can get better being the zone by always acting regardless of these thoughts and feelings. Put your thoughts aside and act. “Action may not bring happiness but happiness doesn’t happen without action”. “You are not your thoughts. You are what you do.

Chapter 7: I’m Relentless.
Change is uncomfortable. Think to the last time you’ve accomplished something you’re proud off. You know that you weren’t just sitting the couch while working on that accomplishment. You know you were uncomfortable. You know you doubted yourself millions of times everyday. Everyone around you probably doubted you and advised you to stop. Being relentless is about being focused on the problem and fixing it. It’s okay to get discouraged but it’s not okay to stop. Relentless has one direction which is moving forward and never giving up.
