Something Fabulous by Alexis Hall
3.0

I read this book by skipping around at first and then later going back and actually reading it in order, so my impression of it may be different. Some of it was pretty enjoyable. I particularly liked Peggy (who’s genderfluid) and all of the times we get to see into Valentine’s mind as he is realizing that gay is a thing and he is allowed to be that thing. Pretty much everyone in this book is queer.

There’s a blithe anachronism to the attitudes* of all of the queer characters except for Valentine, who over the course of the book sort of crosses over from his period-typical values to their way of thinking. And I know the anachronism is by design and I don’t mind it per se, but I found it jarring that Valentine started out where he did, so period-typical attitudes clearly prevail in this world, but everyone expected him to immediately jettison them. Processing takes time, people!

*I mean attitudes about society, not about how they see themselves—I wouldn’t argue that queer people who feel good about themselves are anachronistic.
