This was fine. The human/shifter coexistence isn't explained - like I guess humans are aware of shifters but also shifters live completely separate from them? And then how is this pack's dynamics just now changing - cell phones have been around for decades and yet they're just now allowing women to use them? It just felt so needlessly backwards, I don't see how the women in this pack wouldn't have rebelled. Plus like all the past rape and shit. And I just can't believe Killian is that unaware of it. I don't like books where it takes him having his own "mate" to "wake up" and see all the problems around him.
Una is an unmated shifter with a bad leg. She and the other single women are forced to serve the pack, cook and wait tables, not allowed to own phones or leave the property without permission, give the worst place to live, etc. And this is an improvement from the past, just a few years ago, when women in the pack used to be regularly raped and degraded, many of them not allowed to wear clothes. She's never shifted until one day walking in front of the pack leader Killian she's triggered and recognizes him as her mate. Oh btw when they shift to a wolf and shift back to human they're naked. When she returns to human she's naked in front of everyone and he ridicules her and throws her out of the hall. She runs away to the forest where she goes into "heat" (this is like the omegaverse where heats make you sex crazed) but since he isn't there it eventually becomes painful. When an old crone wolf comes across her she offers to sever their mate bond. This turns out to just be temporary, but they don't know that.
Killian starts finding himself unexplainably interested in Una, he starts repeatedly seeking her out. This continues, he of course smells her arousal, until he finally claims her as his mate. When he and the pack catch her doing many banned things, like having a cell phone, sneaking into human town, etc., he decides to change the rules for everyone. This infuriates the old guard of the pack who challenge Killian, but he puts them down. And that's about it.
This introduces some characters which I'm sure get their own books. There's a young woman who is mated to a 40 year old shifter man, but he's waiting until she's more of an adult. There's also a woman who turns into a male wolf, so I guess kind of a trans character.
