Eh, this is better than your bog-standard YA and I'm reading the sequel. It's also based on ancient Egypt, which is neat. That's about the best I can say. It does the YA love triangle with a twist, where one of the sides is the MC/a guy who's pretty fucked up and continues to be fucked up throughout. He does have a hidden trauma or whatever though so we'll see if that changes in the sequel because I get the vibe that's the canon pairing. Cool magic system, and the characters are likeable enough, but much of the writing has a "[freezeframe] I bet you wonder how I got here ;)" quality to it that's grating. I probably would have loved it at 15, though.
