The Liar's Key
by Mark Lawrence
I loved the Thorns series, so I was really weirded out when I read Prince of Fools. A huge change in tone--although not world or content, really. I just couldn't process it, that was all. With this book in the series, I am totally cool again.
A friend of mine one said that he hated the sophomore efforts of most of his favorite bands, because they hadn't been working on the album material for ten years and didn't know how to work any faster yet, so stuff felt untalented and immature compared to the first album.
I was on the fence about Prince of Fools, but now I see that it was just me, no sophomore slump here.
I particularly loved the flashbacks with the Red Queen and her family. Well done overall. I didn't LOVE the book the way I do the Thorns series, but it may be the better series in the end.
