How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi

5.0

This is a great book to start with if you want to educate yourself about the differences between racism and antiracism. Kendi shows how it is not as simple as being racist or not racist. In each chapter he discusses types of racism and the history of it, providing examples (mostly about America) and explains how his own beliefs have been questioned and changed - his own personal journey to unlearn some prejudices.

He goes back to the 15th century to explain how race was created as a power construct, not a social construct - arguing that race does not stem from the hate and ignorance of individuals but from racist policies which increase hate and ignorance. There is a lot more to it - I will definitely read it again as there were concepts new to me - it is a must read for everyone I know wanting to learn more about race issues.
