A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik

4.0

i spent the hours from 8pm til 4:34am (as it is currently) reading this book, and i have a couple things to say:

1. i love galadriel. she is a unique character; she may not think so but she is a good person - she is selfless in a way that people are, without making a big deal about it, suffering quietly over it, caring. she is loud-mouthed about justice just as she is quiet and cynical in getting through her responsibilities. she is disciplined and she holds real tangible anger. i love her.

2. i also quite like orion, but i'm wary. not just because of the last page but also because i barely know anything about him. but i enjoyed his and el's interaction, and i really hope they get closer over the next books.

3. just two sentences, each 300 pages apart:

It would’ve been all right if he’d saved my life some really extraordinary number of times, ten or thirteen or so—thirteen is a number with distinction. Orion Lake, my personal bodyguard; I could have lived with that.

and then --

“I’m pretty sure I’m up to thirteen at this point, so you’ve got a way to go,” he said, folding his arms over his chest [...]

I LOVE THIS.

4. i liked the entire world, and i liked the people; i liked the magic and i liked the house coming alive. i adore diving into naomi novik's books; and her writing style keeps hooking me in. ahhhh, i want to see where this all leads.
