Wow. This book had me at the edge of my seat till the final pages, so much so I leapt into the air by the final page. I absolutely adored Joan. I LOVE SPACE!!! This made me passionate about getting back into astronomy and appreciating the sky even more than I already do (@my user name for this app literally reflecting my passion for the sky). I saw myself in her crew of Griff, Vanessa, Steve, and Lydia. The time jumping back and forth took a moment to adjust to (as someone who usually is not a fan of time jumps),
I was surprised that Joan's whole space exploration of her own was only 6 pages, when we got Vanessa's for so much throughout the book. I understand Joan missed home, but I wish there had been a little more about the science behind her experiments, or other observations in space for us to envision
, otherwise, no notes. TJR continues to astound and amaze me with her storytelling, her inclusive characters, and how she can get you reflecting on so many different topics. I laughed out loud, I gasped, I teared up - this book was an adventure and a wild ride of emotions, I couldn't put it down. I got this at the library and want to buy it so I can reread the book for years to come, this is a story that will stick with me.
Also that only the women astronauts made it out alive at the end, and that Griff died because of his own decision to keep the gates open in the first place during a literal explosive launch job? Iconic. Sad to see the boys go, but the foreshadowing was there from the jump when Vanessa and Joan were the only women selected out of their interview pool to move forward as astronaut candidates and Joan pointed it out to Antonio. Btw, Barbara sucks. I wanted to sit down and ask her why she acted like the child instead of Frances half the time, damn.
10/10 recommend and golly, was worth the wait!
