Book 46 of 2024: Hallowe’en Party - Agatha Christie

At the preparations for a Halloween party, 13-year old Joyce boasts about witnessing a murder, by the end of the party she is found dead after being drowned in the bobbing apples water. Hercule Poirot is contacted to help solve this murder.

This was my first time reading Agatha Christie and I had been really excited to experience her work, but this book fell a little flat for me. I didn’t particularly connect to any characters in the book and the story felt over complicated at times. The way young children were spoken about as being attractive and the way they examined the potential of sexual motive made me a bit uncomfortable. A lot of threads throughout the story did come together at the end but it felt like a slog to get to the reveal in the final chapter. I’d like to give Agatha Christie another go at some point to see if this was just a bad first pick. If you’ve watched the film A Haunting in Venice - don’t expect this book to be anything like it - aside from the characters having the same names and the existence of a Halloween party, there really isn’t any connection.
