The Captive by Grace Burrowes

5.0

Reading a Grace Burrowes novel makes a plane ride in coach feel like a a first-class cabin journey. I know because that is what happened when I read The Captive :) She's the dark chocolate of romance writers--every word needs to be savored. Not only are the words delicious, the story as a whole contains richness and understanding.

The romance in The Captive contains soul-truths about love and healing and connection while the darker subplot slowly simmers in the background. The 'admission of affection' moment is so sweetly rendered I wanted to quote it here, but I won't ruin the experience for future readers. Suffice to say, it's all that a romance reader hopes to feel every time she picks up a new novel. Ultimately, the story reminds the reader that to chose love in the face of scars and pain is an act of courage and faith. I truly feel The Captive is in the top ten of the best romances I have ever read.
