Dark Apprentice by Kevin J. Anderson

3.0

Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi-Wan's apprentice. *cough* And Luke's too. *cough*

I believe, that it was somewhat better than the first book of the trilogy, but still retains a certain level of mediocrity. It's a good continuation, we get to know the characters better and learn a bit more about what has happened in the universe. Overall the plot reveals quite well, with some little twists and some premonitions, but it's still terribly foreseeable.

The repetition isn't that bad either, at least concerning the past elements, I think I counted only a couple of instances where everyone went on all about the resurrected Emperor and how Luke fell to the dark side and so on and so forth.

When it comes to characters and their side-stories I feel that Mr. Anderson is trying way too hard to make them interesting and likeable. While I enjoyed the character of Kyp Durran in the first novel, here he has become obnoxiously max-maxed. I believe that it will be corrected in the last novel of the trilogy, but it's still hard to believe (yes, even in the Star Wars Universe), I also hope he goes against his brother in the last part.
The twin's backstory was adorable, but I'd like it better if it had been presented as a separate short story. The same goes for Lando and Han always battling over the Millennium Falcon, though here it had some story values, I guess.

Overall - it's a good sequel, a good star wars novel and a mediocre book. I've definitely read (or tried reading) worse in all categories, but I've read better as well.
