Wicked Water by Ellie Pond

2.0

I want to start by saying that the story and the subject were really solid and interesting, and I loved the idea. A mermaid running for her life due to an unknown plot against her and her family? Pretty cool, right? And I liked it, I really did love the story and the plot. What didn't work was the execution. The characters were all over the place with their moods, there were continuity errors galore, and the flow of the story was, at times, choppy and confusing. A few times I caught the same scene stitched in random places and it almost felt like the story was being reworked but no one went back and cleaned up what had been edited or rearranged. I also really didn't like the heroine, who, while I understand was supposed to be kind of naive, was still 27 years old and yet completely immature and irresponsible with the feelings of others. She actually enraged me a few times because of how weirdly selfish and uncommunicative she was being.

I really wanted to like this one. Like I said, I loved the idea for the story, really loved that it was multiple POV, and didn't hate what was happening. I just wish it was a little less messy and more well thought out and executed. Luckily for me, while it is kind of a cliffhanger, it's still a HFN and I can just kind of ...stop.
