I love Abby Jimenez and I think she did a great job tackling the deeply sad, complicated, and sensitive topic of caring for a loved one with dementia. However this wasn’t my favorite of hers as far as writing goes. While it’s usually refreshing and fun to read modern fiction that uses more modern language this felt very over the top, and that’s coming from a late 90’s Gen Zer. It contained so much modern slang and pop culture references that it took me out of the book at a few points. I think that tackling the very real heartbreak of circumstances getting in the way of love, long distance relationships, and balancing your love life with work/finances/family needs was important to bring to the romance genre but if the book were more like 500 pages it could have given more time for the relationship to develop further on paper. This was very sad, which I knew it would be, and the resolution at the end felt a bit rushed. I’d re-read many of her books, and while I’m glad I read this I wouldn’t pick it up again.
