“Your trauma is something that happened to you; it’s not who you are.”
“We all have seasons of needing and seasons of giving.”
“I guess maybe that's how it works in families that love each other unconditionally. You can fight without fear of losing them, and be honest without consequences or repercussions.”
This was an adorable rom-com. Part of me wishes I had read it around Christmas time but when I read this in April, we had literally just had a huge snowstorm the week before so I'll count it as my last winter read of the year!
The characters in this book were so sweet and SO messy. The main character, Ellie, is in complete shambles after losing her dream job and having a one night stand on Christmas with the love of her life. I will say that I don't normally go for insta-love which is part of the reason I didn't give it 5 stars. I do think we see enough other character development that I was invested in both Ellie and Jack as love interests even though the novel only spans about a week on page. (There's at least two time jumps.)
I honestly think that the family steals the show in this novel. Like boozy grandmas? Yes, please! I would have loved to see more development with Andrew and Dylan. That entire dynamic was really intriguing and I don't think we got to see enough about how that developed. There was definitely a lot of backstory unexplored.
Overall, this was a really fun rom-com. I have the Charm Offensive sitting on my shelf and I look forward to reading that one, as well.
