I feel like this book is very of its time and as a result is somewhat dated.  When reading through the modern lens, it’s hard not be distracted by the repugnance of the narrator.

While it is well written and as such has developed a tone that is both reverent and eerie at the same time, the lecherous quality of the narration is a bit much. It’s a book very much both by and for the male gaze.

It’s hard to know what was done purposefully to build tone and set the scene. And what was included because it felt completely fine at the time.
