Earthlings by Sayaka Murata

3.0

The themes from Convenience Store Woman reappear in Earthlings in an attempt to answer a very important question; how can a person detach themselves from the society in which they were born or live? Or perhaps at least, how does someone detach themselves from the pressures and expectations imposed by their society? I really enjoyed pondering this, and I also really enjoyed the absurdity and shock value of the book’s second half, and ending.

Mixed feelings about reading Earthlings, I enjoyed it, but wasn’t as hooked as when I read Convenience Store Woman. I would say on the whole I wasn’t as invested in these characters, although the second half of the book definitely had some interesting moments.
