I’m normally a huge fan of Joan Bauer, but this one fell flat. AJ, the protagonist, lacks dimension. She’s over dramatic, and not the type of character one expects on a novel about a high school senior. The plot was simple and cliche- protagonist wishes something from a supernatural entity, it didn’t turn out the way she wished, she learns lesson.

It seemed like this book was written for elementary school students from a high school perspective, but I wouldn’t choose to share it with my 5/6 graders as there are much better, deeper choices with more opportunity for critical thought also written by Bauer.
