Beyond the Isle of the Lost by Melissa de la Cruz

fast-paced

2.5

It's fine. To be honest this novel was quite boring, easy to read, but boring. Just as the previous novels in the series it was juvenile and ridiculous and absurd and convenient when needed. The characters are nothing crazy, only okay. The ending was really underwhelming. We went through all that and for what? She just goes along, doesn't say shit, doesn't make a scene? I understand that she needs to beat her mother with her own weapons, but still. It felt forced. The plot goes nowhere. Why did we introduced the pool of tears if it meant nothing? Why wad it given so much importance if it didn't even matter? Why was the tea ceremony decret made a focus of the book, one of the most important things for it to have little to no importance? Plus it's hard to take anything serious with these laughable stakes. Red's character arc disappointed me in the end. She knows how to turn those card soldiers back and she is the most important and powerful person in the kingdom after her mother. The whole tea ceremony scene could have been the perfect place to show her mother that she is strong, ruthless, smart, to come into her power, but alas. Disappointing.
