I listened to the audiobook so I’m not sure this affected my rating. While the narrator was very good, I sometimes felt she rushed certain parts. This could also be how Holly Black intended it too. Not sure. I was very much interested in the world but we never really got a flushed out magic system, so many unanswered questions about how things worked. Is that because shadow magic is still relatively new to them? Some characters were great (Odette) & others felt like a convenience (Posey). For all the world building & character background we got in the first half of this book the plot was just kind of weak. Hopefully the second book will pull through and deliver. Probably should have been a one book stand alone.
