The reader should not expect this to be a sequel to “A Manual for Cleaning Women” — many of these feel like preliminary sketches. But they all carry Lucia Berlin’s unique and mesmerizing voice, and some stories, such as “Our Brother’s Keeper” and “The Wives,” make the whole collection worth reading.
