The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

5.0

I literally don’t know where to begin about this one. For starters, I fell in love with the main character immediately. Rin is angry, motivated, and seeking power power and more power. She was an amazing main character to follow and I’m so excited to see her grow. This book kept me on my toes, never knowing what to expect next. This book was incredibly fast paced in an exciting way!

This is easily a five star read as far as the quality goes. I did have a few issues with the story, but while it impacted my enjoyment it is no guarantee to impact others. For me, I found myself getting disengaged from the book with how quick the pacing was and the timeline often jumping. This book felt like three separate books in one and it threw me off with each transition, taking me a while to get adjusted with the new path of the story. However, once I was adjusted I found myself sucked right back into the story.

I also want to mention this book is brutal! This is a book of war, and war is gruesome and cruel. This book does not shy away from that. While this does not take up a large part of the book, I definitely felt myself affected by the descriptions for certain acts of violence/assaults. So I do want to mention a few trigger warnings to be mindful of when reading, which will be listed at the bottom of this review.

Overall this book was absolutely brilliant and I would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a heavy, fast paced, fantasy read with a ruthless main character.
