Dark Waters by Katherine Arden

2.5 stars

I’d been so looking forward to this latest installment of the Small Spaces series. The first two books had been creepier than some adult books I’ve read. Dark Waters, however, did not live up to my sky-high expectations.

Arden shifts the genre from ghost-based horror to a monster-at-large story. Some elements do carry over. We’re now in spring, with a new haunting for the season (but it didn’t feel very spring-like). The story is told from Brian’s perspective, but even though he does succeed in saving the day, I didn’t feel like he got the follow up he deserved, based on the abrupt cliffhanger ending. The Smiling Man isn’t even present, and though they’re on the snake-monster island due to his machinations, it’s not the same.

Arden also introduced a new kid to the crew at the eleventh hour, no doubt to provide a new point of view for summer time, but it seems like too little, too late, but who knows? Perhaps I’ll be surprised. I hope so. I’d so enjoyed this series. And this was quite forgettable.
