All Adults Here by Emma Straub

4.0

I don't know why I've never read Emma Straub before because clearly this is my kind of book. A bunch of flawed and quirky characters just trying to do their best but constantly messing up and making things worse? Yes, please.

These characters are all great, but boy I loved Astrid. She is a no-nonsense, take-charge, incredibly competent woman who has a lot of trouble expressing affection for her children. And she's hilarious! At one point she is lamenting that her granddaughter is reading J.D. Salinger in school, and thinks the kids should be reading Toni Morrison instead. She thinks, "It seemed so easy, to cut out the creeps and sexual predators, just by cutting out all the men. Sure, you'd lose some decent people, but the net result would be so positive, who would complain?" My thoughts exactly, Astrid!
