What to say about this one. It was a challenging read for me; for a variety of reasons. First, is the obvious critic about racism in the publishing industry. Second, is the general themes and insights into racism and xenophobia throughout culture and society as a whole. But what was most challenging for me was reading the main characters point of view. If fact, I might go so far as to say that it was a triggering read for me. The lack of self-awareness, the complete and utter disregard for others, the gaslighting, etc. were such a challenge for me to read from the perspective of the aggressor. I was filled with anxiety and even at times what felt like the beginnings of a panic attack. Which just speaks even more to the power of words and the wonderful beauty of Kuang's writing.
