Heartless by Marissa Meyer

adventurous dark sad tense

4.0

Heartless is the heartbreaking, tragic origin story of the characters (Mad Hatter, Queen of Hearts, and Chester Cat) from Alice and Wonderland.

This is no lighthearted tale. In Heartless, we see the negative impacts of misguided actions, the pain of loss, and the devastation caused by closing off your heart to feelings - whether joy or grief.

We see small, seemingly harmless, irresponsible choices wreak havoc.

We see Time catch up with the Mad Hatter and his descent from an intelligent hat-maker into madness.

We meet the Queen of Hearts when she was a young, dreamy girl, full of love and hope for the future. And we watch the world break her heart in two. Then, transfixed, we see her give up what remained of her shattered heart in exchange for revenge.

What a well-done, but heavy fairy tale.
