I feel bad rating it this low, but if I had to hear about Violet’s “sweet and spicy” scent one more time I was gonna lose it. The writing felt lackluster and immature, despite the characters moving through moving life events. I’m a sap for gay happily ever afters, and wanted something festive, but the writing felt really redundant and fell flat for me. It felt like I was reading about cardboard cut outs of people, heavily tropey, their inner lives and voices underdeveloped.
Also Birdie calling their family “middle class” and talking about her CHOICE OF economic struggles amidst the backdrop of a star studded family with a personal chef, wine cellar, and a holiday party ft Sarah Paulson???? SO gross.
The ONE chapter we hear about Rafi’s feelings surrounding his identity? GLARINGLY obvious it was written by a white woman.
It was Christmasey and messy and had lots of yearning, so there is that, but some of the writing choices took me out of it.
